POSSIBLE UPGRADES TO RED FLAG WARNINGS

RED FLAGS WILL BE LOCATED AT BLUE JAY AND

Installing a generator
Please read the manufactures recommendations as to where to place it. The generator needs to be a certain distance from the home.  The exhaust, from the generator, should not be near any home VENTING system.  If you place the generator exhaust near a vent, the exhaust will enter the vent and your home could be consumed with the exhaust fumes.  Symptoms of inhaling exhaust fumes or carbon monoxide are, dizziness, nausea, headaches and a flushed face.  Leave the home immediately and call 911.   Carbon Monoxide monitors are as important as smoke detectors.  What  great gifts these would make for family members and  friends.   Please remember to change the batteries at least  twice a year, some models have an  "alert" sound when the batteries are low.

What to do with the ashes in your fireplace, wood stove or fire pit:

Hot Ash Safety Fact Sheet

Allow your ashes to cool thoroughly before placing them into a metal container with a tight fitting lid.
Improper ash disposal has become a common cause of many forest fires. Wood ashes retain enough heat to ignite other combustible materials for several days. Forestry officials caution homeowners about this serious threat to the safety of their families and homes. Improper ash disposals have already destroyed homes, outbuildings and valuable resources this fall. Please be careful!!!
What can you do to prevent forest and field fires from igniting from hot wood ash?
  • Dispose of wood ashes in a metal container that can be tightly closed, douse with water, place the closed container outside your home away from combustible materials and leave in the container for several days before disposing of them. (Did you know that many people dispose of their wood stove ashes in garbage containers that are often plastic or even paper bags? It doesn’t take much heat for these types of containers to burst into flames.)
  • Teach other family members about the dangers associated with hot ash disposal
  • Be careful with ashes around areas you might not consider as combustible during wetter times such as mulched flowerbeds and lawns that are drought stricken.
  • Do Not place hot ashes in a dumpster where there are certainly other combustible materials
  • Do Not dispose of ashes in a paper, plastic or cardboard containers
  • Do Not assume the ashes are cold and pour them onto the ground (even into a hole) where leaves can blow onto them or the wind can stir up sparks.

A cord of wood produces about 50 pounds of ashes, which can be used for many other purposes. Once you are POSITIVE your container of ashes is “Cold”, place in a pile and prepare your container for the next load. Lets all enjoy the Holiday season and our beautiful community safely and responsibly.  Thank you.

YOUR NUMBER IS UP!!!            OR IS IT?

Response time to your EMERGENCY is important to you, right?  It’s important to your volunteer response team too!

Please help us help you by putting official green and white reflective numbers (assigned to your home by the county), so we can find you in a hurry.  The numbers need to be placed at the approach side of your driveway or house if you are close to the road.

If you need numbers or have questions regarding location, etc., please drop a note at the fire station and someone will get back to you.

Annual Membership Donation

Walker is such a wonderful place to just "be" and it keeps getting better with new people and events for everyone to enjoy. We are definitely a growing community.

We know you all want to protect our community the best way possible. Many have property here and some invest in our community not only with the gift of money but also with their time, which is greatly appreciated. We need everyone possible to participate, whether it be as a firefighter or helping out with Walker Day or on a setup or cleanup committee for an event. Everyone can help in some way. Our firefighters and medical volunteers certainly do their part and we need you to do yours also.

We know the price of most everything will be going up due to fuel costs and this makes it difficult for all of us. Operating as a volunteer organization, we do not receive tax dollars and must rely on contributions and fund-raisers for operating funds. It takes a great deal of money just to keep things running and operating. WFPA expenses will increase right along with everything else. Please be as generous as possible with your contributions, as they are needed for so many things. Operating expenses, insurances, equipment upgrades and repairs, tools, training for our volunteers so that they can better protect us all, just to name a few. Ask yourself, if your Walker property would be so valuable without your home or trees on it.

So few carry the burden for so many, are you doing your part?

You can now make your donation right here, on line, just click on this link. It's that convenient. We appreciate all donations and we thank all of you who donate your time and money to support the Walker Fire Department.

For information regarding contributions to WFPA, contact Greg Stava at: gregstava@walkerfire.info

Thanks for supporting WFPA and your Walker Community!

WALKER EMTs

Our Walker EMT Team would like everyone to be prepared ahead of time, for any medical/ emergency situation.  Follow the list below to prepare you, your loved ones, and your home.

1. Can an ambulance park close to the house? Can a neighbor move a car for you?
2. Can the Med. team get a stretcher in your home? Are the stairs cleared, furniture moved so we can get through? Which door would make it easier?
3. Have a list of the medications you take. We will want to take the medications with you to the hospital most of the time.
4. Have a list of your allergies to medications, and your medical history written down. I can't tell you how many times patience "forget" to tell us they're diabetic or have a past heart condition.
5. Have a list of phone numbers of family or friends that you want notified, that you're in the hospital. Even though you know the number by heart, when we're stressed, we can forget!
6. If you had all of the above in one place, how easy it would be to scoop it all up and take it with you.
7. Let us know you have pets, so we can ask someone to take care of them.
8. When you see the ambulance leave with the patient, please don't let the remaining family member drive to the hospital alone, even if it's in the middle of the night, go with them.....you'll earn your "angel wings".

And remember......if calling EMT (911) after dark, put on all lights in the house and yard, if possible, and call a neighbor to direct our EMT's to the site with a flashlight.
Be sure your house numbers are at the end of your driveway, in plain site, and readable.

Walker EMTs are currently working on an Emergency Directory. This directory will include all Walker residents. They are requesting the following information from everyone:
Name, Address, Phone Number, any special medical needs, and directions to your home from the  WFPA Fire Station. This information will assist our EMTs/Firefighters in a quicker response time, getting the medical/emergency attention you  or your loved one needs. In the event of a night emergency call, complete directions on file, could be "life-saving". All information will be kept confidential.

Don't wait, send your information today

Fire Conditions

Officials urge those of us who have property in the Walker area to be aware of fire conditions and to be especially vigilant about our fire-related activities, particularly campfires and smoking.

If you have a home or cabin in Walker, remember to maintain a clear, defensible space around your house.  Keep combustible materials such as wood piles, brush, gasoline, and propane away from your dwelling.  Be sure to dispose of your barbeque and fireplace ashes properly. You must put your ashes in a metal bucket or other fire-safe container for at least 3 days before you can be sure they're completely cooled.

For accurate information on the current status of fires at any give time, call 777-5701.
