Walker Day Wrap-up

We had a very successful second year “return of Walker Day”. Over 400 Walker residents, friend and Prescott area visitors turned out to join in the festivities. The fun included live music courtesy of “Guys with day jobs”, a huge community yard sale, games for the kids, (including a bouncy castle), a beautiful silent auction and our traditional, old fashion cake walk.

The live Rock and Roll music was once again a gift from, (mostly area residence), “guys with day jobs”. The yard sale was the biggest I’ve ever seen. Hundred and hundreds of items were donated by the community. The silent auction featured items like beautiful gift baskets filled with donated gift cards from restaurants and retailers and even a pair of sterling silver candelabras. We had over 20 cakes donated for the calk walk and awarded throughout the day to the lucky winners. What fun!

My sincere thanks go out to the dozens of community members that step up each year to help pull off this great event. Special thanks to Laura MacQuen (silent auction), Jean Lupa and Timi Reed (yard sale), Charlie Hyman and Russ Courtney (set up to tear down), Bill loughrige and his team (grill masters), Ellen Odart (kids games), Chief Roger, numerous firefighters… and to all those I missed.  Also, behind the scenes are always generous donors like Gene Tomek (all the food) and the Walker Community Church (all the water).

On top of all the fun, we raised about $5000 profit from Walker Day, received numerous additional contributions and made some great new community friends.
I hope to see you all at next years Walker Day, (no excuses!), and I hope you can all come to this years firefighter appreciation day/pig roast on October, 5th from 4-6pm.

Sincerely,

John Ohanesian
Walker Day Chairman

Yarnel Fire

The tragedy at Yarnel has affected all of us.  This terrible event points out the danger our Volunteers face when they are helping keep our community safe.  We cannot emphasize enough our gratitude to them for the effort they make on our behalf.

The Granite Mountain Hotshots were active in Walker and had last been in our area at the Green Gate Fire.  While our Volunteer’s might not have know them personally they had worked side by side and had the bond that Firefighters share.

If you know any of the families affected please send our condolences for their loss.

We have received offers of assistance from the community for the victim’s families.  The WFPA will be making a donation to the memorial fund established for the families when one is identified.  Any funds donated to the WFPA for that purpose will be forwarded on.

The Lost Akita Has Been Found

The owners of Nikita report she was found in Groom Creek.  Go figure!  She was seen on various days and several times near Renegade Hill, Pink Car Hill and on Mary May.

The owners were impressed with, and very grateful for, the response our community made to find this dog.  Several of you actually went out looking and were in contact with the owners.

Thanks to all of you involved in this search.

Cat Found

An orange tabby cat was found near Millsite (Potato Patch area) on Friday.  It seems to be young, very skinny and very friendly and it is unknown if it is a male or female.   It appears to have a collar impression on its neck and it comes when called….It is thought to be someone’s pet.

If you have any information as to the owners of this cat, please contact Deb at 480-628-2437 or send an email to lolasmom19@yahoo.com.
